As part of our on-going work with The National Ballet of Canada, I have to regularly create and build animated Flash banners to be hosted on the CTV and Globe and Mail websites. For the latest campaign (Cinderella) we wanted to get across the idea of tickets disappearing quickly. The concept lent itself to the magic of the fairy godmother, and I quickly referenced a tutorial I saw on PSDTUTs for a magical glow effect I had seen on the site.
Here are the final banners.
leaderboard (728 x 90) and big box (300 x 250)

Keeping with my previous ‘learning to speel’ post, here’s a beauty from the City of Toronto.
How many mistakes can you find?

Someone spent all that time making circles, and vector bird shapes. Even a ‘page turning’ effect.
But, apparently, no one checked how to spell the word ‘does’.
Maybe that girl is the copy writer, and that’s why she’s grimacing like that.

This is something I mocked up really quickly upon receiving the new brand image for the National Ballet of Canada’s Mad Hot Ballet II fundraiser. Seeing principal dancer Guillaume Côté leaping out of a fireball Evil Knievel-style just made me think of monster trucks, so I just had to follow up on the inspiration.

More after the jump…
Here’s the e-mail that accompanied the image when we sent it over to the NBoC:
When we saw the new Mad Hot Ballet image, it totally inspired us to come up with some ideas for a banner ad campaign, possibly even a new design for the 09-10 season.
We think the NBoC is missing out on a huge potential audience, and this campaign will speak to these new opportunities. An idea like this could take ballet in a whole new direction!
I can see the quotes now…
“It’s a tour de force!” - Toronto Star
“Heather Ogden and Dale “Hutch” Hutchison deliver a true Power de Deux” - National Post
“I’ve never been more drunk in my life!” - DANCE International
Cheers,
Stephen
PS - Don’t fire us.
PS - actually, now that I look at the image again, it would also look right at home in a James Bond opening sequence.

If you haven’t already stumbled upon Smashing Magazine and you call yourself a designer or front-end developer, you owe it to yourself — no, you owe it to your professional development — to take a look. The first visit to Smashing is usually an intimidating experience, much akin to being lost in a gigantic candy/toy/clothing/butcher shop (hey, I don’t know what everyone’s into so take your pick) but you’ll eventually find your place and spend hours exploring. You’ll be inspired by fresh design, informed on the latest AJAX developments, amazed by what hacking CSS can do for UX, and have your head filled with useful front-end design and dev tips to impress your friends with at your next gathering.
If you don’t have hours each week to filter through the data, start off with the Best Of The Month, starting with March 2008.
